Usman Khawaja fact of the day

By batting on the final day at Edgbaston, Usman Khawaja is the first Australian batter to bat on all 5 days of a Test match since Kim Hughes against England in the 1980 Centenary Test at Lord’s, and just the 13th player in 146 years of Test cricket to achieve the feat.

ML Jaisimha (India vs Australia at Calcutta, 1960)

Geoff Boycott (England vs Australia at Nottingham, 1977)

Kim Hughes (Australia vs England at Lord’s, 1980)

Allan Lamb (England vs West Indies at Lord’s, 1984)

Ravi Shastri (India vs England at Calcutta, 1984)

Adrian Griffith (West Indies vs New Zealand at Hamilton, 1999)

Andrew Flintoff (England vs India at Mohali, 2006)

Alviro Petersen (South Africa vs New Zealand at Wellington, 2012)

Cheteshwar Pujara (India vs Sri Lanka at Kolkata, 2017)

Rory Burns (England vs Australia at Birmingham, 2019)

Kraigg Brathwaite (West Indies vs Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, 2023)

Tagenarine Chanderpaul (West Indies vs Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, 2023)

Usman Khawaja (Australia vs England at Birmingham, 2023)

Only 3 of those players didn’t score centuries – Jaisimha scored 20* and 74, Flintoff scored 70 and 51 (Day 1 & 2 of that match were affected by poor weather) and Pujara scored 52 and 22 in a match also affected by poor weather.

Randomly enough, Hughes also hit a 6 on all 5 days of that Lord’s Test, which could also be a record, as the match finished in a boring draw as they marked the 100th anniversary of the first Test match in England.

Khawaja’s progress:

– Saw out the final overs of Day 1 with David Warner after England declared

– Batted throughout Day 2, finishing unbeaten on 126 after Stuart Broad bowled him off a no-ball on 112

– Dismissed by Ollie Robinson for 141 on Day 3

– Went back in during the final session of Day 4 to start the chase of 281

– Batted on Day 5.

Still, he isn’t even the first player to bat on all 5 days of an Ashes Test at Edgbaston, because the aforementioned Rory Burns pulled it off back in 2019:

– Opened late on Day 1 after Australia were bowled out for 284

– Plundered his way through Day 2 and finished unbeaten on 125

– Dismissed for 133 by Nathan Lyon early on Day 3

– Went back in late on Day 4 to start England’s chase

– Dismissed for 11 by Pat Cummins early on Day 5, as England eventually collapsed for 146.
