One of the most memorable Charity Shields ever played was the ’67 edition at Old Trafford between League champions Manchester United and FA Cup winners Tottenham Hotspur, which ended in a highly entertaining 3-3 draw, starting with Spurs going 2-0 up inside of 8 minutes when goalkeeper Pat Jennings scored his team’s second goal from a downfield kick that bounced over Alex Stepney’s head, which remains the only instance of a goalkeeper scoring in the Charity Shield or Communtiy Shield…
Only for Bobby Charlton to score one long-range goal to get United back in it, then the England World Cup winner scored the memorable equaliser with a left-footed thunderbolt from 30 yards that sparked one of BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme’s great quotes:
“That was a goal good enough to win the League, the Cup, the Charity Shield, the World Cup and even the Grand National!”
Charlton did win 4 of those events during his life, the exception being the Grand National.
Frank Saul put Spurs ahead again in the 2nd Half, only for United captain Denis Law to equalise when Jennings could only parry another Charlton rocket into the path of the King of the Stretford End, who put away the rebound, and the Charity Shield was shared between the clubs for 6 months.
