I popped down to Manning Memorial for a roll-up this evening (As is tradition for a Tuesday), and this time around bumped in to my Premier League teammate Brad Hogg (Himself a 2-time World Cup winner with Australia) rolling up with his father Greg, and we got discussing various things about the World Cup Final, during which George Bradley noted that with Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, David Warner, Mitchell Starc & Josh Hazlewood backing up from Australia’s 2015 World Cup win, there are now 22 players that have won multiple Cricket World Cup Finals, all of them hailing from the West Indies and Australia.
So, having been given some homework, I discovered the full list of 22:
1. Alvin Kallicharran (1975, 1979)
2. Clive Lloyd (1975, 1979)
3. Gordon Greenidge (1975, 1979)
4. Deryck Murray (1975, 1979)
5. Viv Richards (1975, 1979)
6. Andy Roberts (1975, 1979)
7. Steve Waugh (1987, 1999)
8. Michael Bevan (1999, 2003)
9. Darren Lehmann (1999, 2003)
10. Adam Gilchrist (1999, 2003, 2007)
11. Glenn McGrath (1999, 2003, 2007)
12. Ricky Ponting (1999, 2003, 2007)
13. Matthew Hayden (2003, 2007)
14. Brad Hogg (2003, 2007)
15. Andrew Symonds (2003, 2007)
16. Michael Clarke (2007, 2015)
17. Shane Watson (2007, 2015)
18. Josh Hazlewood (2015 & 2023)
19. Glenn Maxwell (2015, 2023)
20. Steve Smith (2015 & 2023)
21. Mitchell Starc (2015 & 2023)
22. David Warner (2015 & 2023)
Of course, there are several players that have been in multiple World Cup winning squads – Mitchell Johnson was in for 2007 and played in 2015, Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins were both in the 2015 squad then played on Sunday night – However, only 22 players have been in the playing XIs for multiple World Cup wins.
Another stat Hoggy mentioned – The player with the most wins without a defeat in Cricket World Cup matches is none other than Matthew Hayden, with a perfect 22 wins from 22 matches in 2003 and 2007…
Bradley himself is second on 21, due to missing a group stage game against the Netherlands in 2003.
