The oldest rivalry in Formula 1 history makes a comeback

For the first time since the 2007 Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari and McLaren, the two oldest constructors in Formula 1, have filled out the Top 4 positions in a Grand Prix.

More accurately, for the first time since Red Bull won a Grand Prix, Ferrari and McLaren have completed the Top 4, and, just as it was today in Albert Park, it was Ferrari 1-2 and McLaren 3-4 that day at Spa:

Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa finished 1-2 for the Scuderia, and Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton finished 3-4 for McLaren.

Just shy of 17 years later, Carlos Sainz and Charles LeClerc were 1-2 for the Scuderia, and Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were 3-4 for McLaren.

Another fun fact – That 2007 race was also the first Grand Prix after McLaren were excluded from the 2007 Constructors’ Championship for possessing Ferrari’s technical information, resulting in a $100,000,000 fine from the FIA (The verdict was handed down on the Thursday before the race).

Other recent examples of Ferrari and McLaren completing the Top 4, most of them occurring during the epic fight that was the 2000 season:

2007 US Grand Prix at Indianapolis (Hamilton-Alonso 1-2 for McLaren, Massa-Raikkonen 3-4 for Ferrari)

2002 Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal (Michael Schumacher 1st for Ferrari, David Coulthard 2nd for McLaren, Rubens Barrichello 3rd for Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen 4th for McLaren)

2000 Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang (Schumacher 1st for Ferrari, Coulthard 2nd for McLaren, Barrichello 3rd for Ferrari, Mika Hakkinen 4th for McLaren)

2000 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka (Schumacher 1st, Hakkinen 2nd, Coulthard 3rd, Barrichello 4th)

2000 Hungarian Grand Prix (Hakkinen 1st, Schumacher 2nd, Coulthard 3rd, Barrichello 4th)
