Random fact about this Premier League season

With Aston Villa confirmed to finish in 4th position, this will mark the first Premier League season since 2001-02 in which the Top 4 clubs all represented by different cities in England (In 2001-02 the Top 5 were all from different cities)

2001-02

1st: Arsenal (London)

2nd: Liverpool

3rd: Manchester United

4th: Newcastle United

Plus Leeds United finished 5th, making 01-02 the last time the Top 5 were all from different cities.

So over the next 22 years, there was generally one or multiple London clubs (Arsenal/Chelsea/Spurs) and the Manchester giants (United + City) in the Top 4 (Everton & Liverpool never finished in the Top 4 in the same season), plus the odd appearance from a Leicester City or a Newcastle United, which means it took until now for this to happen again.

2023-24

1st/2nd: Manchester City

2nd/1st: Arsenal (London)

3rd: Liverpool

4th: Aston Villa (Birmingham)

Looking through the books, the record for consecutively different representation appears to be the inaugural 1992-93 season and the 1994-95 season, when the Top 7 clubs all came from different cities/towns:

1992-93:

1st: Manchester United

2nd: Aston Villa (Birmingham)

3rd: Norwich City

4th: Blackburn Rovers

5th: Queen’s Park Rangers (London)

6th: Liverpool

7th: Sheffield Wednesday

1994-95:

1st: Blackburn Rovers

2nd: Manchester United

3rd: Nottingham Forest

4th: Liverpool

5th: Leeds United

6th: Newcastle United

7th: Tottenham Hotspur

The obvious reason we haven’t had this phenomenon for 29 years was because multiple London clubs rocketed to prominence in the mid to late 1990s, namely Arsenal after the appointment of Arsene Wenger and Chelsea, Manchester City came up from the Third Division and got their billions, Liverpool and Everton were usually around the Top 7, while half of the clubs that feature on the two Top 7s have or are currently spending long periods in the Championship:

Norwich City have been relegated from the Premiership more times than any other club, most recently going down for a sixth time in 2022.

Blackburn fell into a pit after Jack Walker’s death and were the first former Premier League champions to be relegated in 1999, then got back up in 2001 and stayed in the top flight for 11 years, then got relegated in 2012 and haven’t been back up since.

QPR were relegated in 1996 and have spent a grand total of 3 seasons in the Premier League since then, the last being in 2014-15 when they went straight back down after winning the Play-Off Final in 2013-14.

Sheffield Wednesday were relegated in 2000 and haven’t been back since, only just surviving relegation from the Championship this season.

Nottingham Forest were relegated in 1999 and at one stage became the first European champions to play in their domestic third tier, but finally won promotion back to the Premier League in 2022.

And Leeds United famously went from competing for Champions League places in 2001-02 to suffering a financial collapse after taking out loans they ultimately couldn’t pay off, leading to the club’s relegation in 2003-04, they would go down to the third tier in 2007 after more financial troubles, then won promotion back to the Championship in 2010, and ultimately returned to the Premier League for 3 seasons from 2020 after winning the Championship.
