30 years later, another driver gets disqualified from a race win in Belgium

For the first time in 30 years, a Formula One driver has lost a Grand Prix victory via disqualification…

and once again, it was at Spa.

1994: Michael Schumacher wins the Belgian Grand Prix and is disqualified post-race due to excessive plank wear, which Benetton claimed was caused by a spin.

A British driver (Damon Hill) inherits the win, and a McLaren driver (Mika Hakkinen) inherits 2nd.

2024: George Russell wins the Belgian Grand Prix and is disqualified post-race for an underweight car.

Once again, a British driver (Lewis Hamilton) inherits the win, and a McLaren driver (Oscar Piastri) inherits 2nd.

Another almost coincidence is that Jos Verstappen inherited 3rd in 1994…

On Sunday, Max Verstappen inherited 4th.

I also get a laugh out of the fact that with Hamilton in Car 44 inheriting the win, the FIA’s document announcing Russell had been disqualified was document number…

44.
