In May 2021, Damien Hardwick said this after Richmond played GWS at Docklands, a game that featured Richmond’s lowest home crowd since 2004.
“The truth of the matter is you can play Richmond games here (Marvel Stadium), but they don’t come,” Hardwick told reporters post-game.
“It’s a pretty simple solution for mine. If you want big crowds, play our home games at the ‘G.
“Mate, I hate coming here. I probably shouldn’t say that.“
The MCG has got soul, it’s got Richmond people there. Our people don’t come here. Plain and simple.
I’d love them to come, but the fact of the matter is I can’t drive them all here.
After that, Dimma’s record at Marvel:
Round 16, 2021: Lost by 10 points to the Gold Coast
Round 22, 2021: Lost by 39 points to GWS
Round 3, 2022: Lost by 33 points to St Kilda
Round 18, 2022: Lost by 4 points to North Melbourne (Who had lost 14 consecutive games)
Round 19, 2022: Drew with Fremantle
Round 7, 2023: Lost by 24 points to the Gold Coast
Then, after leaving Richmond and going to the Gold Coast
Round 11, 2024: Lost by 29 points to Carlton
Round 13, 2024; Lost by 3 points to St Kilda
Round 17, 2024: Lost by 4 points to North Melbourne
But at last, in Round 22 of 2024, Dimma and the Suns, who also hadn’t won south of Tweed Heads since May 12, 2023, ended their drought thanks to an epic Mac Andrew goal after the siren against Essendon to win by 1 POINT:
It’s also the first time they’ve ever defeated Essendon in Melbourne.
Another random note – Damien Hardwick’s last game as coach of Richmond was a 1-point defeat to Essendon.
Damien Hardwick’s first away win as coach of the Gold Coast was a 1-point away win against Essendon.
