A random 50 year anniversary for cricket: Doug Walters hitting a century in the last session

It’s 50 years since Doug Walters hit 100 in the final session of Day 2 against England at the WACA, bringing it up by smashing Bob Willis for 6 off the last ball of the day to finish on 103 not out, sparking a memorable ground invasion:

I would also note that more historically, that was one of the first Test match centuries ever filmed in colour in Australia, given colour TV wasn’t implemented in Australia until March 1975.

As for the match, with Jeff Thomson terrorising Colin Cowdrey alongside Dennis Lillee, the Australians won the match by 9 wickets, and won the series 4-1.

I was nowhere near close to being alive to witness Doug’s century in a session, but I was at the WACA in 2012 with dad in the Lillee-Marsh Stand when David Warner hit a century off 69 balls in the last session of Day 1 against India, bringing up his ton with a decent tribute to Douggie, by belting Vinay Kumar into the former WA Police headquarters for 6 to bring up the fastest Test century by an opening batter (69 balls).

One of the more enjoyable days I ever had in the concrete basin of the WACA.
