Madison Keys runs the gauntlet

By winning the Australian Open, Madison Keys is the first player to defeat 4 Top 10 seeds to win a Grand Slam title since…

Li Na at the 2011 French Open (Defeated No.9 Petra Kvitova in the R16, No.4 Victoria Azarenka in the QF, No.7 Maria Sharapova in the SF, No.5 Francesca Schiavone in the Final)

This past fortnight, Keys defeated No.10 Danielle Collins in the 3rd Round, No.6 Elena Rybakina in the 4th Round, No.2 Iga Swiatek in the Semi Final, and No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Final.

Fancy that, Na and Keys both defeated 4 Top 10 players to win their first major, and both won the Final against the defending champion.

A true testament to one of the hardest title runs in recent memory.

On top of that, here’s a couple of other droughts Keys ended:

– The first woman to defeat the No.1 and No.2 seeds to win the Australian Open title since Serena Williams in 2005 (Defeated No.2 Amelie Mauresmo in the QF and No.1 Lindsay Davenport in the Final)

– The first woman to defeat the World No.1 and No.2 on the way to winning a maiden Grand Slam title since Justine Henin at the 2003 French Open (Defeated No.1 Serena Williams in the SF and No.2 Kim Clijsters in the Final)

– The first woman to defeat the No.1 and No.2 seeds to win a major title since Svetlana Kuznetsova won the 2009 French Open (defeated No.2 Serena Williams in the QF and No.1 Dinara Safina in the Final)

– The first woman to defeat the No.1 and No.2 seeds in consecutive matches to win a major title since Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open (Defeated No.1 Amelie Mauresmo in the SF and No.2 Justine Henin in the Final.)

– Finally, Keys is the first player ranked outside the Top 10 to defeat the World No.1 in a major final since Serena Williams (Ranked No.81) defeated No.1 Sharapova in the 2007 edition of the Australian Open.

Actually, defeated is being kind for that match, because it was an absolute demolition.
