JT’s Succinct NRL Tips: Round 8, 2025

Today marks a year since we lost Terry Hill, and this week I went back and watched the old crosses to the Dapto dogs from the Footy Show, and they’re still as funny as ever:

And it’s complete with Blocker howling with laughter in the background.

Now, for a look at the ANZAC Day Round:

– The Thursday night ANZAC Eve game at Suncorp looks pretty decent as the Brisbane Broncos without Reece Walsh host the unbeaten rampaging Canterbury team, fresh off hosting the biggest standalone crowd in the history of First Grade (65,305), winning the first 6 games for the first time in over 40 years, and recording the first ever instance of consecutive shutouts in the club’s 90-year tenure in First Grade.

– 4pm on ANZAC Day has the great annual showdown between the Roosters and the Dragons at the SFS, the game last year resulting in an almighty 60-12 blowout to the Roosters, who have won 4 out of the last 5 ANZAC Day games, and 11 out of the last 13 against the Dragons, but once again Robbo is flinging the magnets around while Flanno had to find a replacement for Mat Feagai due to that dirty tackle by Toafoafoa Sipley that broke Feagai’s leg.

– The second of the 3 games on ANZAC Day has the New Zealand Warriors hosting the Newcastle Knights in Christchurch (Apollo Projects Stadium) on Friday night, as the Knights look absolutely rancid and lifeless after a whipping from Cronulla in The Hunter, and if my maths are correct the Warriors still haven’t lost in New Zealand this year, and last week thanks to Reece Walsh they became one of the few teams to ever win a Golden Point game without having a 6 tackle set.

In fact, if you want a form line going into the game, the Knights have only defeated the Warriors in New Zealand twice in 20 years (2012 and 2019)

–  The Melbourne Storm have their annual ANZAC Night game at AAMI Park, once again hosting poor old South Sydney who not only lost this game 54-20 last year, but have never defeat the Storm in Melbourne… in fact, Souths have more wins against the Storm in Brisbane (2023) than they do in Melbourne.

– Another Queensland Derby as the North Queensland Cowboys host the Gold Coast Titans in Townsville, and we’ll see if Des Hasler has taught the Titans how to tackle since Easter Sunday… I’ve seen better tackles in a fishing shop, and I rarely ever go to a fishing shop.

– Having snapped a five-game losing streak, Penrith host Manly at Commbank Stadium, as Manly finally get a decent rest after playing 5 games in the space of 25 days… that’s nothing, 9 years ago Newcastle didn’t win a game for 11 months.

– The Raiders host the Dolphins in Canberra as both teams come off solid wins across the Easter weekend, with the Raiders apparently coating themselves in Teflon and slipping every tackle the Titans attempted to win a close game, and the Dolphins pulled off one of the best wins in recent years as they came from 2-16 down and casually dropped 40 points on the Melbourne Storm of all teams on Good Friday Night, after which Craig Bellamy executed one his forwards for missing a tackle.

– And the lucky last game has the Wests Tigers hosting the Cronulla Sharks at Leichhardt, back in the news this week as the first concept drawings for a proposed $40m redevelopment (With help from the NSW State Government) were released, and they look significantly better than it currently looks, mainly because there’s no collapsable railings for people to injure themselves on.

Round 7 Score = 4/8

Progressive Score = 31/56
