After having 2 match points saved by Holger Rune at 5-4 in the final set, then having an 8-5 lead in the match tie-break pulled back to 8-8, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina decided to make one of the insane decisions ever seen on a tennis court, let alone at the biggest tournament in the known galaxy.
AN UNDERARM SERVE AT 8-8, and it wasn’t just an underarm serve, it was an absolutely ungodly abjectly pitifully horrific underarm serve that Rune could easily have stuffed up due to pissing himself laughing at what had been gifted to him, but like a good Top 10 player, he popped the shot past the Spaniard for a winner, then sealed the win 10-8.
So the basic explanation appears to be that Davidovich Fokina was simply crapping himself after being pegged back from 8-5 to 8-8, then completely lost control of his basic inhibitions, played the most insane shot possible, lost the point, and lost the match on the next point.
You know what baffles me the most about that serve?
ADF didn’t serve a double fault THE ENTIRE MATCH, yet it appears the thought of a double fault at 8-8 got to his brain.
