Recognising the Seattle Seahawks rush team had crushed up the 49ers punt protection and created a huge hole in the right side of the field, the Gosnells punter Mitch Wishnowsky showed some classic Australian ingenuity and ad-libbed a massive run for a 1st Down (The ad lib was confirmed by Wishnowsky post-game), and the only thing he didn’t do was bounce the ball after 15 steps, so any decent Australian rules umpire would’ve called him back for running too far.
It all meant stuff all in the end, because the play was called back for offsetting penalties; A 49ers illegal low block (The #10 Ronnie Bell), and the Seahawks for hitting Wishnowsky late after the play.
And here’s Wishnowsky’s side of the story, confirming it was not a drawn-up fake punt:
It did end up working out for San Francisco, because the Seahawks had to punt again in their ensuing set, and the Niners would go 75 yards down the field and score a touchdown to establish a 2-score lead, ultimately winning 28-16 to give them the No.1 seed in the NFC and put the Seahawks on their worst losing streak in 14 years.
