Australia chasing down big 4th Innings targets

In the last 15 years, Australia has chased down a 4th Innings target of 250+ runs a grand total of 3 times, all of them in overseas matches.

Chased down 310 against South Africa at Cape Town in 2011 (Won by 2 wickets)

Chased down 281 against England at Edgbaston in 2023 (Won by 2 wickets)

Chased down 280 against New Zealand at Christchurch in 2024 (Won by 3 wickets)

The common theme in these wins?

Pat Cummins hit the winning runs in all 3 matches.

So much so Cummins now has a higher 4th Innings career batting average (33.57) than Steve Smith (Steve Smith).

Maybe that’s why Pat Cummins sends the opposition into bat when he wins the toss…

Not so he can bowl first, so he can bat last.
