A record setting weekend in Miami for Haas, as Nico Hulkenberg claimed the outright record for the most Grand Prix starts without a race victory + most starts without a podium (209), consigning Andrea de Cesaris to the dustbin of history, and Kevin Magnussen accrued 6 penalties across the Sprint and Grand Prix, breaking the record of 5 set by Esteban Ocon from the Austrian Grand Prix last season, and I would note that all 5 of Ocon’s penalties occurred during the race, which itself will only be bettered by any driver game enough to risk a disqualification.
It’s funny as well, because Ocon himself got a 10-second penalty during the race as well.
The entire list of KMag’s penalties:
1) 10-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during the Sprint race while defending Lewis Hamilton.
2) Another 10-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during the Sprint race while defending Lewis Hamilton.
3) Another 10-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during the Sprint race while defending Lewis Hamilton.
4) A 5-second time penalty for exceeding track limits without good reason during the Sprint race.
5) 10-second time penalty for causing a collision that put Logan Sargeant out of the Grand Prix.
6) A 20-second time penalty (The equivalent of a drive through) after the Grand Prix for entering the pits during a Safety Car period without changing his tyres, which occurred when he tried serving his original penalty during a Safety Car (Breaching article 55.11 of the Sporting Regulations.)
Other than when the cars and the safety car are required to use the pit lane, no car may enter the pits whilst the safety car is deployed unless it is for the purpose of changing tyres.
Given the final penalty was more the fault of the team than the driver, Magnussen picked up a total of 5 penalty points to move on to 10 penalty points (Out of 12) from a mere 6 races, and given they are on a rolling 12-month cycle, he’s a mortal lock to be the first driver to be banned for a Formula 1 Grand Prix since Romain Grosjean in 2012, which would make him the first driver banned for reaching 12 penalty points since the system was introduced in 2014…
Which was the consequence of Grosjean’s driving in 2012.
Still, could be worse – Mahaveer Ragunathan once got 9 penalties during a Formula 2 race.
