It’s 20 years to the day since the Tiger Woods-Chris DiMarco Final Round at Augusta National, featuring the most memorable shot in the history of the Masters Tournament… Tiger’s chip on the 16th.
What gets forgotten after that:
Woods led by 2 shots with 2 holes to play, he then bogeyed the 17th to cut his lead to 1 shot, then on the 18th hole DiMarco had a chip for birdie that would’ve won the tournament, but the shot cruelly rebounded off the pin and finished 10 foot away, which is one of the greatest almost shots in the history of the Masters:
Woods then missed a 14-foot putt for par to win the tournament, and DiMarco wound up nailing his 10-foot putt to force the playoff, which had moved from the 10th hole to the 18th hole for 2005, and this time around DiMarco made par again, but Woods sank a 15-footer for birdie to win his fourth Green Jacket.
It was the second consecutive time DiMarco had finished runner-up at a major, given he finished tied for second in the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, losing to Vijay Singh in a 3-way aggregate playoff, and would again finish runner-up in the 2006 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, finishing 2 shots behind Woods.
