20 years since Gary Ablett Jnr’s non-goal of the century

Deep into the 3rd Quarter of the Semi Final between the Sydney Swans and Geelong at the SCG, on the night of September 9, 2005, the Cats had a decent lead of 22 points in a very low-scoring game, having held the Swans goalless for over an hour of play, and during a rushed forward 50 entry for the visitors, Gary Ablett Jnr couldn’t quite get his boot to the ball before it was called out for a throw-in…

Which was a shame, because the mercurial Junior kicked one of the greatest goals that never was.

Subsequently, the Cats didn’t kick that crucial goal before 3/4 time, and Michael O’Loughlin broke the Swans’ drought to cut the margin to 17 points at 3/4 time, still a huge hill to climb for a team that had only kicked 3 goals in as many quarters…

Of course, what happened in the last quarter of that Final?

Despite the Cats kicking the first goal of the Quarter, Nick Davis got off the chain and produced the greatest Finals rescue act in history, kicking 4 goals in a quarter, the last of which won the game with 3 seconds remaining.

And the call from Clinton Grybas and Rex Hunt on 3AW… grand larceny it was!

2 weeks later, the Swans won their first premiership in 72 years.

But yep, Gaz Jnr was a few inches away from changing the course of history.
