A-League

A Classic Sporting Moment That Occurred On April 27

In September 1995, Colombian goalkeeper RenĂ© ‘El Loco’ Higuata cemented his status as the pioneer of the SCORPION KICK in a friendly against England at Wembley, a moment remembered by all as one of sheer random entertainment.

And that was just a random save in a friendly that finished 0-0.

But, on April 27, 2018, at Hunter Stadium, in an A-League Semi-Final against Melbourne City, Riley McGree gave us…

THE SCORPION GOAL.

Brenton Speed perfectly calling the sudden shock of the scorpion

Absolutely peak A-League material right there – So many mind-numbingly average moments that are rightfully forgotten, and then out of nowhere, Riley McGree conjures an absolute worldie through a perfect mix of design and accident.

The greatest goal in the wild history of the A-League by a country mile, and didn’t Ernie Merrick love it.

Classic Scotsman – He probably showed as much emotion when the Jets gave him the guillotine.

It ended up making the Top 10 list for FIFA’s Puskas Award for the ‘Most Beautiful Goal’ of 2018, but, in an obvious case of EuroBias, it missed out on the Top 3 – The award went to Mo Salah.

Robbed.
