Crazy Craig’s Pick of the Day: 30th March

Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town

On the third day, the madman rose again.

Here we are at the last Saturday of March, and with it we’ve acquired a very solid Easter Saturday of racing, with the Tancred Stakes meeting at Rosehill (The winner gets their silks painted on the Rosehill winners’ post), and the revamped Australian Cup meeting at Flemington, featuring the All-Star Mile rematch between Pride of Jenny and Mr Brightside…

And I would note that this year’s Australian Cup marked 20 years since Lonhro won a very memorable edition of the race, memorable because the field also contained the reigning Caulfield Cup winner (Mummify), the reigning Melbourne Cup winner (Makybe Diva) and the reigning VRC Derby winner (Elvstroem)..

Then during the race, Lonhro got checked in the straight, then got clean passed by Delzao, but Darren Beadman picked him up off the canvas and ran down Delzao just before the post in an all-time finish, a stirring run that even had Greg Miles barring up in the caller’s box.

Worth noting Makybe Diva may very well have figured in the finish had she not been blocked by Mummify

Of course, a few weeks later Lonhro was supposed to have his grand farewell in the Queen Elizabeth, only to be rolled by Grand Armee in an ending that mirrored the farewell of Lonhro’s sire Octagonal.

Other noteworthy races include the other Group 1 at Rosehill, the Vinery Stud Stakes for the fillies, plus the Tulloch and the Emancipation Stakes for the horses going to the old AJC Derby next week at Randwick, there’s another Group 2 at Flemington that I don’t know about, the watered down Oakbank races have returned for another Easter, and we have the WA Oaks at Ascot, but the better news about the Ascot meeting…

Sir William Pike has returned from injury.

Fantastic, now I can bet on Perth racing with 0.5% confidence.

So it’s on to Crazy Craig, and much to my amazement, Craig actually picked a WINNER last week, and he did quite well with his Group 1 selections, because he got Riff Rocket + the obvious in Imperatiz to win the William Reid, and he got a damn unlucky 2nd with Sunshine In Paris losing The Galaxy in a head bob…

Obviously Sunshine In Paris didn’t have a Good Luck Charm!

Hello hello everybody it’s Craaaazy Craig TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale, and I do apologise for only posting 1 tip, but I’ve buggered off to Stawell for the Easter weekend!

‘Why have you gone to Stawell, Crazy Craig?’

Well, it’s so I can STAWELL Crazy Colin from taking all the piss out of my fridge!

Ha ha ha!

Anyway, I better make the most of my one bullet in the chamber this week, so I’ll do what I do best and ignore the conventional wisdom, this time in the fabled Australian Cup with the All-Star Mile quinella of Princess Jenni and Mr Brightside…

AND GO FOR THE AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS WINNER WITH THE NEW ZEALAND FORMLINES, LEGARTO!

Sounds like something Pavarotti would sing about!

Now, why am I going against the All Star Mile Quinella with some questionable Kiwi 2000 metre form?

Because I’m CRAZY, that’s why, and that’s all you bloody well need to know!

Enjoy your weekend folks, stay safe, stay negative, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, and remember, I’m Crazy Craig, and that’s why they call me Craaaaaazy Craig!
