Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town

Alright folks, the best time of the year for racing continues as the Melbourne Spring Carnival rolls on to Caulfield Guineas Day, always one of the great days of October with the 3 Group 1 races (The Might and Power, the Guineas and the Toorak Handicap) to start the Caulfield Cup Carnival, which used to be four major races until the Thousand Guineas was moved back to its old Wednesday slot, then was pushed all the way back to mid-November.
Of course, I do love bringing up anniversaries of great races, and this year is the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest comebacks since Lazarus… God’s Own winning the 2005 Caulfield Guineas after getting smashed twice in running, before getting off the canvas to win a race that had to be seen to be believed:
Even Brian Martin, a bloke who called more races than I’ve had hot showers, said he’d never seen anything like it.
Other than that, you’ve got the Might and Power with a 4-horse field, not quite matching the 3-horse field they got for the 2016 race when Winx had a match race against Black Heart Bart, while Rosehill hosts the Roman Consul Stakes and the Hill Stakes, with just a week to go until The Everest, which is now a Group 1, because if there’s one thing Australian racing needs, it’s more needless Group 1 races.
Could you imagine Australian racing without Group 1 races?

Other feature events include Opening Day at Ascot, which is in Belmont, the Murray Bridge Gold Cup in South Australia, the Queensland Cup at Eagle Farm, and the country cups this weekend include Manangatang in Victoria, and I once thought Manangatang sang This Is Australia, Hamilton in Victoria, and the Leonora Cup, run in the Goldfields of WA, and a fun fact about Leonora is that every year over the first weekend of June, Leonora hosts the fabled Golden Gift, which is the richest mile running race in Australia.
People think there’s deadset nothing in Central WA, but there’s a shitload of cash buried in the ground.
So it’s on to Crazy Craig, and last week Pericles wound up running 3rd in the Epsom, paying $2.20 the place… which is more than what Autumn Glow paid for winning the bloody thing, so as far as we’re all concerned that’s as good as a WINNER!
Omen Bet: Point Barrow (No.5, Barrier 11) in Race 2 at Caulfield (MR2), 12:50pm AEDT
1200m 3YO Fillies Thoroughbred Club of Australia Plate
Trainers: Anthony & Sam Freedman, Jockey: Daniel Stackhouse, 56kg
Hello hello everybody it’s Craaaaazy Craig TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale, and what a great weekend we’ve got ahead of us with those wild old races at Caulfield, and I’ll get straight into it this week because this pick is very special for meself, because I had a good mate from the old days of Shepparton in the early ’90s with the surname Barrow who died last week, and myself and Crazy Colin affectionately knew him as ‘Wheel’ or ‘Wheelie’…
Because he’s Wheel Barrow, you get it!
Hopefully the aptly named POINT BARROW can get up for him!
The Spandau Ballet P(r)ick: Golden Boom (No.2, Barrier 3) E/W in Race 9 at Caulfield (MR9), 5:10pm AEDT
1100m Group 2 WFA Schillaci Stakes
Trainer: Tony Gollan, Jockey: Blake Shinn, 58.5kg
What do you get when you cross Spirit of Boom with Golden Falls…
GOLDEN Boom!
Always believe in your soul, you’ve got the power to know, you’re indestructible, always believing!
Crazy Group 1 Picks
Might And Power: Well I’ve got a 1 in 3 chance of finding the winner, so default to the favourite which is probably Treasurethemoment… funny name, because we sure as shit won’t be treasuring this race
Toorak Handicap: Evaporate to remain solid
Caulfield Guineas: Second chance saloon for Autumn Boy… can he win in the Spring?
Enjoy your SATURDAY folks, stay safe, stay negative, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, and remember, I’m Crazy Craig, and that’s why they call me Craaaaaazy Craig!
