The Chalk Eaters Guide Review: 13th April

Getting the same view of Winx as her rivals for the last 4 years (Still: Sky Racing & TABCorp)

Some 420,000 screaming and crying patrons crammed into Royal Randwick to get one last look at some horse who we all apparently like who was really good and stuff.

Winx to win the Queen Elizabeth and Mr Waller to shed a tear- WINNER

Two sure things rolled into one, and Chris certainly wasn’t the only one shedding a tear across the wide world of sports, as the mighty mare went out with a bang, and got a farewell performance that some of our greatest racehorses didn’t get- A win and the adulation of a massive crowd.

She goes out on 37 wins from 43 starts, with 33 in a row and 25 Group One victories and the GDP of an island nation in prize money- Fair dinkum, we’ll probably never see a winning streak like that again.

Good on ya Chris, and thanks to Verry Elleegant winning the Oaks, it was only fitting that Winx became his 100th Group One win as a trainer!

Chris Waller after the race:

As for Hugh Bowman, who finishes with a record of 34 wins from 35 rides aboard Winx… all he got was a Liverpool Kiss goodbye.

Look at Caro Searcy bloody loving it (Still: Sky Thoroughbred Central)

And our four-legged Queen strolls into the sunset.

Dubhe in the Sydney Cup at Randwick- 12th

Very forgettable performance by the International, who never looked like running in the top half, let alone the placings or winning.

Speaking of which, Shraaoh (Who I had in this guide not three weeks ago) kept Chris Waller at half-mast, triumphing in a fierce battle with Vengeur Masque, enabling Australia’s best trainer to make it a hat-trick of Group One victories to round out his historic afternoon.

The last time I heard of Jay Ford riding a Group One winner was aboard Takeover Target a decade ago… well not anymore!

Eduardo in the Bel Esprit Stakes at Caulfield- THIRD

Run ragged by Miss bloody Leonidas… between Mr Quickie and now Eduardo, it’s been a fun time for shorties at Caulfield in the last fortnight.

In a word or four, bit of a letdown.

Cup Night in the Raconteur Stakes at Ascot- WINNER

Cup Night made it a hat-trick of wins, and it was a very good performance, given Patty Carbery had to start his run at the 450 to put the pressure on the leader Altani, and then built enough of a lead to hold off the flying Rebel Knight, as the sustained run took its toll, holding on to win by a head.

Big effort and well earned Bernie Miller!

CRAZY CRAIG’S LAY OF THE DAY- KIAMICHI IN THE PERCY SYKES (SR4)- LAYED

For only the second time, Crazy Craig has actually managed to lay a horse… or was he wrong, as he claims he’s using reverse psychology to get these horses home… It’s fair to say, this is why we call him Craaaaaaaaazy Craig!

Anyway, it looked like Kiamichi needs a rest after a big prep, capped off by that Golden Slipper win, as she simply ran out of legs against the leader Anaheed, who held on by a bee’s dick to hold off Kiamichi’s stablemate Flit, handing James Cummings and Godolphin a rare loss in the juvenile ranks this season.

A Two-Time Everest winner and a Golden Slipper winner as his only victims- He sure is Craaaaaaaazy!

BEFORE I FINISH THIS, A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO READ THE CHALK EATERS GUIDE FOR THIS WEEKEND! MUCH APPRECIATED, AND HOPE YOU FOUND IT AS USELESS AS I DID.
