Crazy Colin’s Picks of the Day: 2nd July

Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town

So it’s on to the last month of the racing season for 2021/22, and while Jamie Kah and Ben Melham deliver the groundbreaking news that they’ve hooked up, presumably at a Mornington Airbnb while we weren’t looking, it appears a few people connected to Might And Power have bowed out of racing this week:

Allan Denham, son of Mighty’s trainer Jack Denham and someone who did a heap of work with the champion behind the scenes, trained his last runner (For the forseeable future) on Thursday, and appropriately Adios Steve won that race at Hawkesbury, and on Tuesday, Mighty’s owner Nick Moraitis died aged 87 after living with liver cancer for many years.

The bloke who gave us the distinguishable white, grey & pink silks… He shall be missed.

So we move on to the weekend’s racing, and this weekend it’s on the slightly interesting side, with the big twilight meeting at the great establishment known as Corbould Park on the Sunshine Coast, with the running of the Caloundra Cup, the Glasshouse and the Winx Guineas, because it was at Corbould Park in 2015 where Winx’s 33 race winning streak began.

Other than that, there’s the Winter Championships Finals at Flemington, and the usual boring crap from Belmont, with the Belmont Guineas and the Aquanita Stakes, named after the Cox Plate-winning horse whose pedigree was so obscure his own progeny weren’t eligible for the Stud Book.

So with Crazy Craig having time off, I now I have to introduce CRAZY COLIN back into the fold, and when I told him what the usual format is for the Picks of the Day, the only response I got from Crazy Craig’s crazy mate was, and I quote:

“Couldn’t give a shit, to be honest.”

So on that note, here’s Crazy Colin, serenading you with Willie Nelson’s version of the song he wrote for Patsy Cline…. Crazy!

Pick of the Day: Battleton (No.2, Barrier 4) in the Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast (BR7), 4:45pm AEST

1600m 3YO SW Group 3 Double R Winx Guineas

Trainer: Bjorn Baker, Jockey: Nash Rawiller, 57kg

Hello everyone, Crazy Colin reporting in for the next month, and quite honestly I have no idea why I’m here giving tips, because there’s more important things to life right now, like the fact that bloody lunatic Craig KEEPS STEALING MY BLOODY TOMATOES!

AND THEY AREN’T BABY TOMATOES EITHER!

AND NONE OF YOU ARE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!

BASTARDS!

So for the time being I’ll keep stealing Craig’s beer from his back fridge, and for the time being I’ll be giving you my Pick of the Day, and with most of the decent racing being on the Sunny Coast, I may as well go there, and if you want a horse who stands the best chance of pissing it in while doing a handstand, then I think we should go to the Winx Guineas, where I’ve seen….

Battleton.

Yes, Battleton is the very definition of progressive without winning, as he ran 2nd at Gosford on May 7, then went up to Brisbane to run in the Fred Best on May 28 and ran a game 3rd, then his last start run in the Gunsynd he beat all home bar a good winner in Kiss Sum, who is destined for bigger and better things.

Now, the fact that it’s Kiss Sum form absolutely craps on anything else in the race, even if some of his rivals have got winning form across the board in boring craphouse Class 1 and 2 races, and the only major question to ask is can Battleton run out the mile, because it’s the one distance he hasn’t tested yet this preparation….

Because if he can, he’s got this race by the spot where his balls used to be!

So there you go, Battleton, My PICK OF THE DAY.

Random Elvis Presley Pick: Looks Like Elvis (No.5, Barrier 13) E/W in Race 8 at Flemington, 4:10pm AEST

1600m Listed Quality VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final

Trainer: Jarrod Austin, Jockey: Linda Meech, 56kg

Apparently I have to give a Value Pick as well…. So off the 7-day backup from Rosehill, HERE’S THE KING:

As the snow flies…

On a cold and grey Melbourne morning, a poor little baby foal was born

In the ghetto….. in the ghetto!

And Jarrod Austin cries,

‘Cause if there’s one thing that he don’t need

It’s another hungry foal to feed

In the ghetto…. in the ghetto!

RANDOM ELVIS FACT: Today is 65 years TO THE DAY since Elvis Presley released the soundtrack to Loving You, which was the first film in which Elvis had a starring role, and it contained the song Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear!

Which means… THE OMEN BET IS ON.

So that’s all from me, and as always, stay safe, look after each other…. and don’t steal your neighbour’s tomatoes!
