Crazy Craig’s Picks of the Day: 6th September

Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town

Alright folks, the first Saturday in September, the AFL Finals have ignited with Adelaide going down in a glorious pile of steaming shit, and we’re back at Moonee Valley for the second running of the revamped Moir Stakes, after the MVRC decided last year to bring it 3 weeks forward out of its AFL Grand Final Eve Friday night slot and back to a Saturday afternoon for the first time since 2011, when it was still a Group 2 run over 1200m on Cox Plate Day.

The other result of that change was allowing the Manikato Stakes to move up from Cox Plate Eve to the AFL Grand Final Eve Friday night races, and the added effect of that is once again making the possibility of a horse completing the Manikato-Cox Plate double, achieved only by Strawberry Road (1983), Rubiton (1987), Dane Ripper (1997), and Sunline (2000)… although it must be noted all of those horses won the race when it was held in August and they were 1st Up.

Of course, this is the last Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley for a few years, while Randwick hosts Group 2 races such as the Furious Stakes, Tramway Stakes and the Chelmsford Stakes, the Farnley Stakes at Belmont, which will probably get moved to Pinjarra after we had heavy rain in Perth, and of course, there’s another great race meeting this weekend, held in the arse end of nowhere…

BIRDSVILLE.

Rated the 2nd-worst track for backmarkers in Australia…. only ahead of Mornington.

So it’s on to Crazy Craig, and there was devastatation last weekend as Tom Kitten was scratched behind the barriers before the Memsie Stakes…

Which means we had our first collect of the Carnival!

Hello folks, Crazy Craig, TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale reporting in, and this week I’ve got a THEME.

6/9.

As today is the 6th of September, aka 6/9, we’re going to go for…

RACE 6, NUMBER 9.

The World Champion Pick: Rosberg (No.9, Barrier 2) in Race 6 at Moonee Valley (MR9), 3pm AEST

1200m Listed 3YO C&G McKenzie Stakes

Trainer: Clinton McDonald, Jockey: Jamie Kah, 56kg

Because we are on a Grand Prix weekend…

Keke Rosberg, the only driver in the last 60 years to win a World Championship with 1 win

Two fun facts about the Rosbergs:

Keke Rosberg was the inaugural winner of the Australian Grand Prix at Adelaide in 1985, which was the last time a Finnish driver won a race for 12 years, until a certain Mika Hakkinen came along

And Nico Rosberg was the youngest driver to record a fastest lap when he did it on debut at Bahrain in 2006, aged 20 years, 8 months and 13 days…

19 years later, can Rosberg record another fast lap on debut and WIN!

Spot the Scandinavian

The Sex Pick: Great Emotion (No.9, Barrier 1) in Race 6 at Belmont (PR6), 3:15pm AWST (5:15)

1200m Graduation 60+ Rating Handicap

Trainer: Michael Grantham, Jockey: Clint Johnston-Porter, 55.5kg

Well folks, I think we’ll see some great entertainment in Burswood before the big Fremantle-Gold Coast final….

BECAUSE, can we get the rarest Sex Pick of them all – Race 6, No.9, on 6/9.

Make it happen, Johnston-Porter.

Moir Stakes Pick: I’m getting the word… NIANCE.

Enjoy your weekend folks, stay safe, stay negative, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, and remember, I’m Crazy Craig, and that’s why they call me Craaaaaazy Craig!
