It is exactly 100 years since Phar Lap was foaled in Seadown, New Zealand, sired by by Night Raid from Entreaty by Winkie.

Another interesting note is that Night Raid also sired Nightmarch, who denied Phar Lap the 1929 Melbourne Cup and completed the first ever Cox Plate-Melbourne Cup double, which Phar Lap also achieved the next year.

Fun little note about the 100th anniversary – Today’s major race meeting in New Zealand is at Phar Lap Raceway (South Canterbury Racing Club) in the port city of Timaru, just south of Seadown.
