You know the world’s about to end if I’m picking more than one winner on a Saturday.
I think I’ve won enough cash today to buy myself one of those leper islands in the Caribbean.
Sir Elton in Race 3 at Randwick- 3rd
We knew even yesterday that this was Sir Elton’s last performance for the winter, and it definitely showed, as he started superbly, led comfortably, but had absolutely no answer to Haut Brion Her, who sat in 2nd the whole way, and it should be said, never looked like getting beaten.
Unfortunately for Sir Elton, his candle burned out long before his legend ever did.
Lord Beldevere in Race 4 at Flemington- WINNER
Pretty much a textbook win for a favourite anywhere in the universe, let alone the land of Oz.
Parked (slightly) off the speed with cover, and then Benny Melham used his wits and edged to the outside to get clear running at the top of the straight, and from there he had a deadset lap full to belt his sorry-arse rivals into submission.
Easy stuff, and well done to Ben + the Maher-Eustace marriage, who bagged the quinella with Stageman in 2nd.
Sylvia’s Mother in Race 7 at Flemington – WINNER
History has been made.
AN APPRENTICE HAS RIDDEN A WINNER FOR THE CHALK EATERS!
Congratulations young Michael, what an achievement.
Sylvia’s Mother has got a hope for the future, even as her daughter rushes to catch the 9 o’clock train, especially when she looking a bit off up until the 400m, before responding superbly to Poy’s hard riding and taking off like a rocket down the far side of the straight, probably to catch that same train to stop her daughter marrying that man from Galveston-Way.
“Sylvia’s Mother, coming with big strides”- Add that lyric into the song Dr Hook!
Zaratite in Race 5 at Belmont- WINNER
Pikey has done it- He’s finally delivered for The Chalk Eaters!
He rode like a busted arse for the first four races, and to be honest, it really seems to be that Pikey on days where I’ve put him in the Chalk Eaters is like Mitchell Pearce in an Origin game… before 2019.
But he didn’t disappoint with Zaratite, who more than proved her favourite status in the driving rain with a convincing win, which was enough to give The Wizard the Australian record for winners in a season- His 224th winner for the 2018/19 season, beating the former Newcastle flyer and NRL Footy Show regular Allan Robinson’s record of 223.5 from 2005/06.
And it was bloody lucky that Zaratite won, because I was dead sure that people were boarding flights to Perth with nail-laden baseball bats.
Well done Wiz, that’s a tribute to the ball-chafing grip you have on Perth racing.
CRAZY CRAIG’S TIP OF THE DAY
LAYING Greyworm in Race 9 at Randwick- SCRATCHED
First, Chris Waller outsmarted Crazy Craig and scratched England at Rosehill, and now Johnny Hawkes has proven just why he’s long been enshrined in our Racing Hall of Fame, by outfoxing the Macedon Madman with some shrewd decision making.
Well, it was that and several hundred Group One victories.
Chalk it up as a no result.
