After a good couple of weeks of place betting, it’d be a fair assessment to say that Crazy Craig has gone off the boil, even more so than when he left a bunch of $50 notes on the footpath for people to find.
The Each-Way bet Gin Martini was shaken out of contention by Port Louis, meaning I’ll never know if she was good enough to run 4th, and Riddle Me That presented well enough, but the Tasmanian Still A Star lived up to her name and left him eating cobwebs.
So that’s now a fortnight’s worth of favourites placing and the Each-Way bet doing nothing, and from the perspective of this roving reporter, I had another forgettable afternoon out of solidarity with the Bairnsdale bandit.
Getting locked down on a long weekend is one human rights breach I can’t forgive, but much like the West Coast Eagles, if I’d fallen out of a boat, I’d have hit concrete.
I took the place bet on Gin Martini – Nothing
Masked Crusader – Lost the All-Aged Stakes at the barrier draw
Riddle Me That – Well, we did get a bonus bet back
And finally, I got on Lost And Running in the last at Randwick with said bonus bet, only to see him drift out from $2.35 to $2.75, and promptly give that sorry field an absolute ball-tearing after leading all the way.
$10 back from $90, a transaction only slightly worse than Alan Bond’s purchase of Channel Nine.
Gin Martini E/W in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick – 8th
“Gin Martini shaken up”
Now that ranks alongside his line of “Tip Top’s the one” after Les Bridge’s Tip Top won at Randwick in 2018.
So as it turned out, Gin Martini was shaking up nicely, getting clean passed by Hilal and responding to Brenton Avdulla wielding the whip, but then along comes Hugh Bowman on Port Louis across eight lanes of traffic, straight into Gin Martini, who in turn shifted into Queen Of Wizardry, who in turn hit (General) Patton, putting all three horses out contention, and looking at the stewards’ report, Hughie got a 2-week suspension for that angry piece of riding.
Clearly he was unsettled after Rothenburg’s fatal accident in Race 1… In hindsight it was amazing he even rode out the rest of the meeting after that fall.
Gin Martini = Shaken AND stirred.
Riddle Me That in Race 8 at Caulfield – 3rd
Well, I don’t know about Crazy Craig, but I can’t have any complaints about the run.
Daniel Stackhouse gave Riddle Me That every hope of winning the race by parking in the one out one back, he presented very well in the straight and briefly took the lead, but the little Taswegian mare Still A Star, trained by Bill Ryan, who sadly doesn’t long left in this world due to lung cancer, stuck to the inside lane despite the track being downgraded to a Soft 5, and proceeded to win and win very well, as Missile Mantra ended up running into second ahead of Crazy Craig’s pick of the day, who just couldn’t sustain the run.
Still, somewhere in the world, I imagine CC abused Riddle Me That and said it had a heart as big as a pea, because he’s Craaaaazy Craig.
