Now that he’s a Group 1 winner, where can Mazu pee, Al?
So that’s another Saturday of carnage done, and with Brisbane being inundated by God’s Tears, Mazu, the Lay of the Day in the eyes of quite a few donkeys, completed a rapid rise from Group 3 galloper to Group 1 winner, 5 years after another Snowden-trained galloper in Redzel won the very same race in the very same silks, and it was also the first Group 1 win for Sam Clipperton since he rode English to victory in the 2016 All Aged Stakes at Randwick…
To give you a rundown of what’s happened to Sam since then, he went to Hong Kong (And Japan) for a riding stint in 2016, came back in 2019, the world went to hell with a hand basket, and in all, he racked up a grand total of 14 second place finishes in Group 1 races (At least 4 of them were in Honkers) in the 6 years between drinks.
The Red Cadeaux of jockeys…. And he even won the race in a set of red silks.
Of course, besides the SA Derby which is tied into this week’s Crazy Craig review, the other highlight of the day is that Lloyd Williams will have at least one Melbourne Cup runner this year, with Point Nepean getting the golden ticket in the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington:
And that’s before the Williams family import their 500 Irish stayers.
Among the other boring races, Elite Street won the Roma Cup at Belmont with 95% of the country on board, there were upsets galore on the bog track at Scone, none more so than Bring The Ransom at 51/1 in the Dark Jewel, and turning now to the Crazy Craig Picks, it was a forgettable start to the day, as Startantes drowned in the Eagle Farm rain after getting back in the run, Harleymoven was hardly movin’ in the straight in the SA Derby…
But Atlantis Beach knew he was the big Donovan Pick, and he DULY SALUTED, which means we can play the LUCKY LIPS VICTORY TUNE!
Hail, Atlantis Beach!
Pick of the Day: Startantes in Race 4 at Eagle Farm = 5th
If you can’t see Startantes in that replay, she’s somewhere right about here:
Yep, she’ll hit top gear any moment now.
Oh wait it’s too wet she won’t make up ground.
Value Pick: Harleymoven in the SA Derby at Morphetville = 8th
I’ll hand this over to Jose Mourinho:
Random Donovan Pick: Atlantis Beach in Race 7 at Belmont = WINNER ($2.70w/$1.40p)
3 wide with cover the entire race, clean running the entire straight – THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMING.
I reckon this was also a belated omen bet – I say that because when I went back and looked through Donovan’s catalogue today to listen to Atlantis again, up pops his bio, and what do you know…
HE TURNED 76 ON TUESDAY!
YEP, THIS TRAIN IS BOUND FOR GLORY!
AND HERE’S A LAUGH – SOMEONE COMMENTED ON FACEBOOK THAT CRAZY CRAIG ISN’T A GOOD TIPSTER…
WELL DUH, HE’S A SCHIZOPHRENIC, HE’S NOT MEANT TO BE, AND SECONDLY, HE TIPPED A WINNER, SO SUCK ON THAT.
