Crazy Craig’s Picks of the Day Review: 15th January

Thousands of people go to the Gold Coast to see Coolangatta look good, and Saturday was no exception

From the 7HorseRacing Twitter

As for why it took me until Sunday to get the Crazy Craig review up…. let’s just say my Saturday night consisted of a few ales celebrating an engagement, followed by an hour or two sweating it off with some singing and dancing.

Moving on from that confronting piece of news, I thought it was a very solid Saturday of racing, headlined by the frivolity of the Magic Millions, while I found myself intensely multi-tasking between the races, updates from Novak Djokovic vs Hawke Eye, the Ashes and the tennis, and Thanasi Kokkinakis would probably be wishing Tennis Australia played every tournament in Adelaide, but the obvious reason that will never come to fruition is that it’s Adelaide.

Of course, the big highlight of the day from the POV of the races, outside of Coolangatta saluting as expected in the 2YO Classic, was that Miss Conteki stormed home to grab the chocolates as Crazy Craig’s Pick of the Day at Ascot, which means that for the umpteenth time in a row, we can SOUND THE LUCKY LIPS VICTORY TUNE:

As they say, make hay while the sun shines.

Random Big Bopper Pick: The Bopper in Race 7 at Rosehill = 4th

Jesus, that was the biggest wreck involving a Bopper since February 3, 1959.

Value Pick: Beau Rossa in Race 6 at the Gold Coast = 7th

Donuts for Crazy Craig as Beau Rossa got caught wide and could only battle on for 7th in the Magic Millions Cup, but the flip side to that is that he got a front row seat for the best finish of any race anywhere in Australia on Saturday, with 4 horses split by a half head, and ultimately the honours went to ‘Legs’ Eleven Eleven on the outside, nudging out Holyfield by a half-bitten ear, with Apache Chase and Frosty Rocks alongside, and the disappointing fact about it was Eleven Eleven wasn’t wearing saddlecloth 11.

The ultimate takeaway from the race is that Eleven Eleven loves a Queensland holiday more than a retiring Victorian couple, because he’s now completed a hat trick of Magic Millions wins on the big day at the Gold Coast.

2020 = Won the 3YO Guineas thanks to Alligator Blood being disqualified months after the fact

2021 = Won the Magic Millions Cup

2022 = Goes back to back in the Magic Millions Cup

What’s that saying about horses for courses?

Pick of the Day: Miss Conteki in the Miss Andretti Stakes at Ascot = WINNER ($3.90w/$1.36p)

$3 OUT TO $3.90, THANKS FOR COMING EVERYONE.

Ah, it just worked out perfectly…. Miss Conteki drifted like a chip packet in a gale, Clairvoyance got smashed in to $2.15 thanks to the Pike factor, but he just used too much petrol grabbing the lead, the speed was hot pretty much all the way with the likes of Carocapo in the race, and the result of that was that the horses who sat off the midfield, the most notable being Miss Conteki and Iseered Iseered, stormed over the top and had the last laugh.

Of course, another of those chargers was $101 pop Floyd, who stormed in to 3rd and destroyed quite a few trifectas and First 4s, which wound up paying a lazy $6330 in a race where the second favourite won.

A very good win, and it’s yet another win for CRAAAAAZY Craig’s Pick of the Day!
